Scott Sedgwick

August 5, 1963 - November 22, 2020

Scott Sedgwick, age 57, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Donna Greenawalt Sedgwick, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 22, 2020. Born in Norwalk on August 5, 1963, Scott was the son of Elizabeth Clark Sedgwick and the late Thomas Sedgwick. Growing up in Westport, he was a graduate of Staples High School, Class of 1981. Scott worked as a service technician for the Redwood in the Round Company for 35 years. Scott's true passions were fishing, boating, and spending time at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. He had his unique way with words but would do anything for his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan of the UCONN Women's Basketball, New York Yankees Baseball, and New York Rangers Hockey teams. In his spare-time, he also enjoyed playing backgammon, target shooting, and fixing things. In addition to his wife and mother, Scott's memory will be cherished by his children, Scott Sedgwick, of Norwalk and Jessica Sedgwick, of Frederick, MD; a brother, Thomas Sedgwick, and his wife, Denise of St. Croix, USVI; a niece, Dr. Samantha Morrell and her husband, Dr. Shawn Morrell; and a nephew, T.J. Sedgwick. A memorial service to celebrate Scott's life will be announced when the weather is warm and family and friends can freely gather. Robert (Bob) McManus

February 8, 1963 - January 20, 2020

Robert (Bob) J. McManus (56) of Danbury and formerly Westport, passed away on January 20th from a sudden heart attack. Bob was the son of the late Jim and Nancy McManus and is survived by his siblings, Melissa, Mitchell and Stuart. Bob had a passion for people and their stories and connected to many In his community over the course of his lifetime. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Most recently, Bob worked at BMW of Ridgefield in customer service. He also enjoyed spending his time with the Westport and Norwalk emergency services groups. Services will be private. Giselle McGuire Hauser 

November 27, 1963 - October 24, 2019

Giselle McGuire Hauser Giselle "Zellie" Marie McGuire Hauser, age 55 of Fairfield, the beloved wife and best friend of Robbie Hauser, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, October 24, 2019 after a sudden and brief illness. Born in Wilmington, DE on November 27, 1963, the daughter of the late George and Dorothy McGuire, she was raised in Westport and lived in Fairfield. Giselle graduated from Staples High School, Class of 1981. She attended UCONN, where she earned a BA in Communication Science with a minor in Marketing, as well as an MA in Marketing Communications ABD. She was a valued Office Manager for Mann & Company CPAs in Shelton. Giselle was a breast cancer survivor and lived her life with tremendous strength, courage and passion in everything she did, with a fierce love for family and friends that she so treasured. Always the first to offer help, her caring nature is why she had so many friends throughout her life. She was extremely proud of her Irish/Scottish Heritage. The beaches of the Cape were her favorite place and she loved Halloween and dressing up. Above all, Giselle had an endearing smile, great sense of humor and loved to laugh. As an avid Yankees and Steelers fan, she enjoyed spending time at the Seagrape and Tony D's watching games and hosting football Sundays at home with her husband and friends. Music, especially The Who, Steely Dan and Genesis and rocking out to them, was a huge part of her life. She played the flute, guitar and piano, sang in the Staples HS and St. Luke Choirs and was also in A Cappella during her freshman year at Skidmore College. An incredible bocce player, Giselle was part of the Fairfield Bocce League for almost 25 years during which she was Vice President, Treasurer and organized epic banquets! Survivors in addition to her loving husband of 9 years include her three beloved siblings, Mark McGuire and his wife Debbie of Sarasota, FL, Megan McGuire of Boston, MA and Ann Wortman and her husband John of Groton, MA. She will also be missed by her stepchildren, Matthew Hauser and his wife Vanessa of Houston, TX, Molly Hauser of Shelton and Rory Hauser and his wife Lynn of Fairfield; and her sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen McGuire, Nancy Hauser and Eileen Silos. Giselle is also survived by her cherished nieces and nephews, Priscilla, Kelly and Patrick McGuire, and Ainsley and Jack Wortman; her great-niece and nephew, Alice and George Kunkel; and step grandchildren, William Hauser, Ryan and Avery Rose Hauser, many cousins and her precious cat, Molly McGuire. She was predeceased by her brother, Matthew McGuire, her stepson Zachary Hauser and her brother-in-law, John Silos. Friends may greet her family on Monday, October 28, 2019 from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center. Colin Bronson

August 15, 1963 - February 14, 2019

  Colin Bronson died peacefully on February 14th at St. Vincent's Hospital with his loving siblings by his side after a brief but valiant battle against cancer. He was 55. 
He was born on August 15, 1963 in The Hague, Holland to his parents, Josephine and Howard Bronson. He moved to Westport at age 10 with his family and spent many happy years living on East Ferry Lane. Colin graduated from Staples in 1981. 
He established a thriving career as an independent entrepreneur in Westport and then in Fairfield. He had the knowledge to repair sophisticated X-ray machines for doctors, dentists and veterinarians without ever going to technical school. At a young age he taught himself about ham radios, stereos, and CBs. He was widely known to be the man to call on if you had a problem with anything in the electronic field.
 Colin was a volunteer usher at Westport Country Playhouse for several decades. His numerous activities also included ushering at the Fairfield Theatre Company and the Klein.
 Colin was ardently devoted to a range of health & wellness pursuits. He was a vegan for many years. He was an active participant in Fairfield's various yoga classes and meditation groups. 
Colin Bronson was a true original. His trips down the Post Road in his open-topped antique car with his dog in the passenger seat brought joy to many Fairfielders.
He is survived by his sister Michele Bronson and her husband Richard Baudisch of Newtown; his brother William Bronson and his wife Jennifer of Orange; his nephews Charlie, Jake, and Mitchell Bronson; his niece Emily Bronson; his girlfriend Johanna Korby, his many friends, and his dog Sprout. He was predeceased by his parents.

Richard Frey

November 14, 1962 - July 6, 2018

Richard M. Frey of Danbury, a former resident of Westport’s Saugatuck section, died July 6 at Kindred Hospital in Dover, New Jersey. He was 55.

He was born in in Saugatuck on Nov. 14, 1962, the son of the late Ronald I. White and the late Lucille A. (DeMeo) White. He was the grandson of the late Luca and Rose DeMeo. 

Survivors include one son, Robert (Robbie) Frey and one daughter, Cathryn (Cathy) Frey. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by one son, Richard Frey Jr. 

A private service was held among immediate family. A mass will be held on Sunday, Oct.  21 at 5 p.m.  at the Church of the Assumption, 98 Riverside Ave.

Steve Lewis

November 29, 1962 - May 11, 2017

Steve Lewis, 54, died on May 11, 2017 after a prolonged, valiant battle with cancer. He was the son of Patricia and the late Raymond Lewis of Westport.
Steve was a graduate of Staples High School '81 and Southern CT State University '85, with a B.S. in Exercise Science and Nutrition. After many dedicated years in the fitness industry, he treasured his final years with Gault Family Companies of Westport.
He leaves his cherished wife Leslie Fairbaugh and their sweet dog Chico; his mother Patricia Lewis; brother Vernon Lewis and wife Lynn; sister Lisa Setian and husband Steve; nieces and nephews Christopher, Taylor, Cassidy, Jeremy, Melany; and the entire Fairbaugh Family, who loved him dearly.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society .

Victoria (Tory) Wallace

Victoria Wallace, 54

Victoria (Tory, Vicky) Wallace of Westport and Waianae, Hawaii died May 7 in Honolulu. She was 54.

The daughter of Cynthia Wallace of Westport, she graduated Staples High School in 1981. She went on to Hawaii Pacific University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree cum laude, and master’s in social work with distinction.

A licensed social worker, her life was devoted to helping children in crisis. Throughout her 20-plus year career, she worked tirelessly and passionately in both Connecticut and Hawaii, always fighting hard for the welfare of disadvantaged kids.

She was also a member of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department.

She loved all animals, especially the homeless dogs and cats near her Hawaiian neighborhood that she fed regularly.

She was a unique soul, always true to herself and those around her. She embraced diversity and had a natural friendliness to people from every walk of life.

She was devoted to the culture and way of life in Hawaii, making it her home for over 20 years. Her spirit will live on through those who have been deeply touched by her love, courage and fierce loyalty to justice.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Brian Schwinn and niece and nephews Maddie, Ben and Peter Schwinn of Fairfield.

She was especially attached to her niece and nephews as well as her beloved dogs Kaipo, Bandit and Spike and her cat Tink. She was predeceased by her father Gordon Wallace.

She is lovingly remembered by her uncle and aunt John and Carole Giegerich of Wayne, Pennsylvania, and cousins, Jack Giegerich lll, Dana and Helen O’Brien of Riverside, Doug and Kathy O’Brien of Houston, Texas, Amy O’Brien, Beth O’Brien, Teddy and Hillary O’Brien, Katie, Alex and their son Devin Perkins. She is missed dearly by her extended family and many friends in Connecticut and Hawaii.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in May in Hawaii and on Wednesday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East.

Karen Marie Siddell of Boca Raton, Fla., a former Westport resident and 1981 graduate of Staples High School, died May 12. She was 51.

She was born June 25, 1963 in Holyoke, Mass., the daughter of John A. and the late Mary Brunton Siddell. She was raised in Westport and remained here after graduating from Providence College in 1985, where she excelled in two varsity sports while earning a degree in business.

After leaving Westport in the early 1990s, she lived in Vail, Colo. before moving to Florida where she lived for the past 20 years.

Those who knew her will remember her beauty; inside and out, her extreme kindness, her athletic ability and her wonderful personality. She was always quick with a laugh and enjoyed being among family and friends. She was an enormous lover of animals, especially her dogs Heidi, Magnolia, Jedd, and JJ.

She is survived by her father John A.  Siddell of North Palm Beach, Fla., her sister Beth Reed of Delray Beach, Fla., and her husband Stuart, her brother Daniel of Vail, Colo. and her brother John of Westport. She is also survived by two nieces, Courtney and Madelyn, and one nephew, Garret Reed as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Paige [Netherton] Totillo

Paige Marie (Netherton) Totilo of Norwalk, a former Westport resident, died Jan. 5 at the JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla. as a result of complications from pneumonia. She was 51.
She was born July 6, 1963 in Louisville, Ky., and moved to Westport with her family in 1973 where she graduated from Staples High School in 1981. At Staples, she was an active member of Staples Players.
She graduated from Katharine Gibbs and received an Associate Degree from Norwalk Community-Technical College. She worked as a business technology specialist for Evaluation Associates Inc. (EAI) and later for RTi Market Research.
She married Thomas Totilo in 2001 and moved to Norwalk where they lived happily with their three cats. She was a NASCAR enthusiast and enjoyed attending races with her husband and friends.
She and Tom were part of a group that founded the East Coast Meerkat Society and raised funds to upgrade the meerkat habitat at the Staten Island Zoo. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends and making trips to the Caribbean.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her parents Elliott and Joyce Netherton of Westport; her sister Cynthia Lipe and brother-in-law Joe of Spring, Texas; her brother Hank and sister-in-law Wendy of Woodland Park, Colo.; nieces and nephews Kelly Sarvis, Tracy Bowling, Miranda Bickford, Mallory, Henry, and Wyatt Netherton; and great niece Lilly Sarvis.

A Celebration of Life in the memory of Paige will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (buffet lunch at 1 p.m.), at the Westport Woman’s Club, 44 Imperial Ave.

Colin Rankine

     Colin Alexander Rankine died peacefully on December 11 at the age of 47. Colin was born in 1963 and spent the early years of his life in New York and Massachusetts. His family moved to Westport in 1967 where he went through the Westport school system, graduating from Staples High School in 1981. After attending Duke University, Colin graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering '85. He also earned an M.B.A. in Finance and International Business from New York University, where he was one of only two candidates awarded recognistion as a Stern Scholar for Academic Excellence.     In 1989, Colin married Dawn Sesto, his beloved wife of 22 years. Together they raised three beautiful children – son Alex and daughters Emily and Heather. The family resided in Darien where they were active in the community sports and the Darien High School Theater & Arts programs. They recently relocated to their new home in Ridgefield, CT.
     Colin's career enjoyed 12 years with IBM in technical marketing and consulting, as well as senior management positions with GIGA Information Group and Forrester Research where he served as VP of the Computing Infrastructures Group. With more than 20 years of experience, Colin most recently joined Pace Harmon as Senior Associate specializing in complex IT outsourcing.
     Colin was never happier than when he was spending time with his family and friends. His greatest prides in life were his children and their many accomplishments. He was an avid sailor and very loyal to his alma mater Duke, rarely missing an opportunity to watch their Blue Devils win many NCAA championships. His kind, generous nature and sharp wit was endearing to all who knew him and will long be remembered.     In addition to his immediate family, Colin is survived by his two sisters, Jennifer Rankine Wehmhoff of Westport and Joan Rankine Harrison of Stamford. He also leaves behind four nieces and nephews and a large, loving extended family. Colin was predeceased by his parents, L. John and J. Elaine Rankine of Westport. Services will take place at Green's Farms Congregational Church in Westport at 11:00 am on Friday, December 30th, followed by a reception for friends in celebration of Colin's life. Interment will be a private family service held at a separate time at Evergreen Cemetery in Westport. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to:

Colin was such an integral part of growing up in Westport that I might have to put right up there with Westport Pizzeria or the mini bus when it comes to my childhood memories. Colin and I worked our way through elementary school, high school and beyond. He was always admired for his incredible intellect, quick wit and good looks! How he managed to be in the Chorus and all those AP classes while maintaining a bit of a “bad boy” image I will never know.
Colin possessed such charisma that you would happily head to the Rankines for a pool party long after Viva Zapata had closed and all you really wanted to do was head to bed. One big smile from him and a group was sure to follow!

8th grade, French class (ALM!) at Coleytown JHS taught by the straight-from-central-casting Mr. Piper. Most vivid memory would be the massive eraser fight my friend Colin Rankine and I got in, resulting in Mr. Piper literally chasing the two of us to the principal’s office, cussing us out in French (way to stay in character!) as we ran down the curved hallways of Coleytown JHS, trying to stay ahead of him in his incensed state (Mr. Piper’s temper being known to us from the previous “tack on the teacher’s chair incident”). Ah, youth!

Charles Theur emailed me the following memory of Colin:

I thought I would share one fond memory that reflects Colin’s wit.  It must be considered in the context of that age of adolescence when hormone levels are high in boys and is not meant to offend.  I know that Colin meant no offense when he provided the following memorable moment in junior high school.

The setting was Mr.Wright’s English class at Coleytown, ninth grade.  We were challenged with devising a descriptive two word rhyme.  Colin was first to volunteer that he had the answer to the question, “What would you term a well-stacked girl who does anything you want?” Shortly thereafter he supplied the answer of a “toyable joyable” to great laughter for the boys in attendance—that is with the exception of Mr. Wright!

Pamela Bolton Stein-Dicosola, a former Westport resident, died April 30 in New York City. She was 47.  She was the wife of Len Dicosola of New York City.
Born Sept. 18, 1963, in Plainfield, N.J., she was the daughter of Lane Bolton of Clinton and Hugh Stein of Boca Raton, Fla. She grew up in Westport and graduated from Staples High School. She moved to Texas where she worked as an alcoholism counselor in a rehab facility in Austin. She married her husband in Westport before they moved to New York City. In addition to her husband and her parents, she is survived by a brother, Hugh Stein of Fairfield; a daughter, Jessica Leto of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Susan Tobin of Old Saybrook, and several nieces and nephews.

I think that [Greg] was one of the first people I knew in school in Westport. I remember in first grade he wore a bow tie in our class picture. I think it was that year that his own father died very young. He seemed like a kind guy when we got older, although I knew him best in elementary school. Wilfred Bennet (Ben) Anderson

March 7, 1963 - January 17, 2010

Sadly, Ben Andersen passed away on Sunday night, January 17 [2010]. Multiple myeloma, a form of bone marrow cancer, took his life. He died peacefully, surrounded by his mother, wife, and brothers. Ben was a man of faith and faced his situation with hope. Thankfully, his treatments gave him more than six years of life after the initial diagnosis - enough time to raise his two kids almost into adulthood. Many of you will remember Ben from the swim team, church youth group, and Scouts. He was a good-hearted, hilarious, intelligent, trustworthy friend and I will miss him so much.  - Peter Allen

Donna Evelyn Kirste, 44, of Hollis, ME, died June 8, 2008, at her home. Donna was born November 27, 1963, the daughter of Col. Milton R. and Evelyn Sturtevant Kirste, on Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated from Staples High School in Westport, CT; went on to receive her LPN degree from St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua; her RN degree from New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord; and served on the nursing staff at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH until August, 1993. She was united in marriage to Randal James Columb on April 24, 1993, in Laconia, NH. She was a resident of the Manchester/Nashua area for 15 years, and for the past 4 years a resident of Hollis, ME. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Bar Mills Community Church. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, skiing, animals, homemaking, and learning how to play the piano. Most importantly, she was very family-oriented and was an exceptional mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend. She is survived by her beloved family, including: her parents; husband, Randal "Randy" J. Columb; daughters, Emelia and Kelsea; sisters, Janet Cahall and Sandra Handy; brother, Michael Kirste; brother-in-law, Cliff Cahall; ten nieces and nephews; and many friends. A funeral service will be held on June 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut Street, Manchester. Burial will follow at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester. Donna was a little bit different from most, she had epilepsy, and that kept some people away.  Donna was a great friend to everyone in our family. My sister Debbie ('83) was extremely close, close enough to call her her best friend.  As well as my bother Jim ('82) and myself  - we always had a good time together, whether it Great Adventure, skiing or just hanging around the pool. Wherever we were I always remember her laughing.

     Alan was my first childhood friend. His family moved into my neighborhood when we were five years old. Alan was born in Hong Kong and moved to Westport from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where his father was working for Esso (now Exxon Mobil). When Alan’s family moved into the neighborhood his mother found out that there was a boy down the street (me) who was the same age, so she came to my house and asked my m play together. From that point forward Alan and I were friends. As small children we played stuffed animal parade, but as we got older we graduated to dinosaur action figures, Hot Wheels, and slot car racing. Alan was the best playmate a kid could have.
      When it was time to choose a musical instrument at Bedford Elementary School, Alan and I both chose the clarinet. Alan was always a better musician than I. He came by it honestly. His home was always filled with music and his parents and older siblings all were musically inclined as was Alan. When we were both home from college one summer Alan called to ask if I would like to play a practice session on our clarinets for old times.
      Alan was also an avid athlete. One of my favorite memories of Alan was from his Methodist confirmation. Alan wore his t-shirt and gym shorts underneath his suit and tie so that when he got home for the small celebration his parents had arranged Alan could strip off the formal attire and immediately be ready to start shooting hoops in the driveway! He encouraged the rest of us who were invited to the party to do the same.
      I have nothing but fond memories of Alan. He really was the first person I  ever called a friend and he returned the kindness from the time we were five years old until we went off to college. Alan had a great sense of humor, an intelligent mind, and a kind soul. I’ll never forget him.   ~ Michael Marks

Bridgeport Teen Killed
Woodbridge (AP) - A Bridgeport teen-ager was killed Friday morning after his car ran off the Merritt Parkway, rolled over and was struck from behind by another vehicle, state police said.  State Trooper Michael Rutkowski identified the victim as Lawrence Mahar, 19. No other injuries were reported in the 1:07 a.m. accident.
